COMPREHENSIVE RACE INFORMATION
The Farndon Soapbox Derby will take place on Sunday 17th September, 2023 with the first race starting at 11.00am. The car parks will open at 10.00am and for a full breakdown of what is going on and when, we will update this information on this website and our social media nearer the event. It is a time trial charity event for gravity powered homemade karts, competing along a 350m tarmac road with gradual decline, which has curves, jumps and sections of steeper declines.
Karts will start from the bed of a 30ft trailer and thence down a shallow ramp onto the road course itself.
Up to two kart pushers will be permitted on the trailer start bed ONLY.
Contact with the kart MUST finish at the top of the ramp. The pushers will then run and follow the kart down the course to assist in the event of stoppage, and to assist in the recovery of the kart back up to the start at the end of each heat.
Each kart will make three timed ‘race’ runs of the course and the final positions will be determined by the total time recorded for the three ‘race’ runs – a 15 second penalty per intervention will be incurred should the kart driver require assistance from their own race crew. There will be no practice run this year.
There are 2 separate categories Juniors (12-17) and Adults (18 and over) this refers to the drivers of the kart, (the Construction and Race Team can be of any combination of ages).
Be wacky! - we encourage imaginative, bright designs for your karts, sponsorship and logos are encouraged. There will be a competition for the kart judged on the day to the most creative and fun. And an additional prize for the individual kart team that raises the most sponsorship money.
Whilst there will be no cost to come along, spectate and support us – (this is a free to spectate Charity Event) - we will be encouraging donations for parking, and street collections on the day.
RACING INSURANCE: KEEPING YOU SAFE
The organisers of the Farndon Soapbox Derby are committed to keeping all our racing teams as safe as they can possibly be during the event.
As set out in the rules from the very start, the Derby carries third party cover for the event, but this does NOT cover YOU for competing in a kart. This is a requirement of our Event Insurers and the CWaC Safety Advisory Group
This requires each team to take out their own event participation insurance.
You are quite a liberty to take out your insurance policy with whomsoever you wish, but you will not be allowed to compete unless you have provided a copy of this to us, ahead of the event, and we have extended the deadline for this to be secured until 1 September.
Our recommended Insurer is Sports Cover Direct
Each participant intending to go ‘trackside’ needs to take out a ‘Sports Accident’ policy, as it will provide cover for income relief and payouts in the event you were to sustain any injuries.
Every member of the team needs to have their own insurance, be they drivers, passengers or pushers, to be properly covered

please specify that the event is ‘soapbox racing’ on your application as this is the designated description of the activity for insurance purposes.
They have three levels of cover, depending on your occupation, starting at about £7 per person. So it’s inexpensive .. but very necessary.
If you are taking this responsibility to organise the Insurance for the whole team, please be mindful that you need to inform the Insurer of any medical conditions of your team members as the Insurer needs to be aware of these conditions.
You need to provide the following information for each team member.
Full names
Date of birth
Any pre-existing medical conditions or any injuries/treatments received in the past 2 years
The date of the event.
Once you have your team’s cover in place please forward a copy of each certificate to admin@farndonsoapboxderby.co.uk We need this to be on your Kart file alongside the rest of the documentation.
